In reading the Enterprise Architecture Body of Knowledge, I was struck by the front and center positioning of investment management: a search on the document turned up 28 references to Capital Planning Investment and Control (CPIC), all with the implication that one of EA's primary missions - if not THE primary mission - was controlling the IT investment. Sounds like IT portfolio management to me!
The IT portfolio management literature (Maizlish/Handler, Kaplan, Benson/Bugnitz, ITIL Business Perspective) however is a little weak in its appreciation for the role of EA. Furthermore IT portfolio management tools are NOT enterprise architecture tools, nor have I had any vendor try to sell me an integration between an EA tool and a portfolio management tool.
Most of the architects I know (self included) simply don't have the financial background to move fully into the CPIC side of things. I'm thinking about going for an MBA in Finance or Strategic Management (probably on the 5 year plan). What about you?
